Top Five Dental Health Checkpoints

Feb 3, 2013 | Arizona Pet Health

Your pet’s dental health is very important. Some veterinary experts estimate that ⅔ of our pets don’t even get dental hygiene at home and some say that possibly as many as 85% of our pets have periodontal disease by the age of four. Poor dental health and hygiene can lead to more serious health concerns for your pet such as heart, lung or kidney disease.

Here are the five most important things to look for when assessing your pet’s dental health.

1. Breath

Check your pet’s breath. Bad breath could be a sign of tooth decay or mouth or tongue ulcers.

2. Lips

Cracks, open areas, sores and swelling can indicate serious health issues. If you see any of those signs, contact your veterinarian for an exam.

3. Gums

Check their gums for color – they should be pink, not red, gray or blue.

4. Teeth

Make certain there are no loose teeth or teeth with cavities. Also check for build up around teeth and gums called plaque.

5. Other Physical Signs

Check for excess drooling. Examine the inside of their mouth and tongue carefully for any ulcers, redness, masses, or swelling. If you observe any of these signs, discuss them with a professional to ensure your pet stays healthy.
