On Saturday, May 11, 2019, AZPetVet teamed up with the LovePup Foundation to help celebrate the one-year anniversary of their Hip to Chip program! While collars and tags for your pet are critically important, a microchip can help provide identification should collars or tags come off; so this program works to ensure that all dogs from Maricopa County Animal Care and Control (MCACC) animal shelters receive a free microchip upon adoption, ultimately helping to reunite pups with their families if they accidentally get lost. In the first 12 months, the program has helped expedite these reunions, sometimes without the lost dogs even having to go to the shelter (some of the animal control officers have been able to scan and return home in the neighborhood right away!)
As part of the anniversary celebration event, AZPetVet provided free microchips to owners who already have pups that didn’t yet have a chip. We setup three different temporary exam tables to help manage the consistent flow of folks bringing their pups (and a couple of cats!) to the event, and our incredible team of doctors and technicians were on hand obtaining vitals, administering microchips, and providing some wonderful TLC to all the pets coming through. Once chipped and registered, owners and pets had the opportunity to swing by our AZPetVet table where additional team members handed out some fun swag, provided some extra belly rubs for those loveable pups, and pet parents could chat with our CEO, Dr. Anderson. In just the three hours of the event, in total we provided 117 pets with microchips!
We received nothing but great feedback from our partners, volunteers, and all of the members of the public who got to come and enjoy the event with their dogs. Every person and family who provided feedback to us and the LovePup crew was so grateful to receive the free microchip for their beloved pets, as well as the swag, food, treats, water, leashes and collars from all the on-site event partners – LovePup, AZPetVet, Safeway, Lerner & Rowe, Max & Neo, and MCACC.
We all know that giving back comes in many forms; everything from individual small acts of kindness to larger donations or gestures by a team can create positive impact throughout both our workplaces and our community at large. At AZPetVet, we are honored to have incredible team members throughout or family of hospitals who embrace our core values including respect for others, and share a dedication to helping pets in need.
Yesterday we announced our holiday donation drive partnership with one wonderful organization; today, we are excited to share the second partnership for this holiday season!
Grandpaws Pantry is another local, grassroots effort focused on collecting and distributing supplies for pets in need. Their strategy is to focus on different needs at rescue organizations or other animal focused organizations within the Phoenix area. They also work with senior centers to get pet supply care packages to seniors and their pets each holiday season.
The mastermind of the whole organization is an 11 year old named Sonya, who has a strong love and passion for helping rescue pets in the community. Sonya and her family actually have a strong relationship with our very own Arrowhead Ranch Animal Hospital, who saved their newly adopted dog Bhaskar many years ago from parvo. From that experience, it left a lasting impression to Sonya to try and do more for the rescued pets and the organizations that help them here in Phoenix. Some of the places she has helped through her charity include a Soldier’s Best Friend, Halo Animal Shelter, Sun City 4 Paws Rescue and Sun Valley Animal Shelter.

Each year during the holiday season, the AZPetVet family of animal hospitals is honored to partner with a local, community-based organization that works to make a difference in the lives of pets and their pet parents! One of the organizations we are partnering with this year is Helping Hands for Homeless Hounds.
They are the very definition of a grassroots local cause; Cheryl, the founder, is actively involved in doing site visits to homeless shelters and camps all throughout the Phoenix area. She is well loved and appreciated by those she serves and takes an accepting and non-judgmental approach to the care of these animals and their owners. The services she and other volunteers provide on these visits are food and comfort measures, as well as vaccinations, microchips, and county licensure for all homeless-owned pets. For those pets that the owner is no longer able to care for the pet, she also coordinates rescue efforts to re-home these homeless pets.

Earlier this year, we had the opportunity to sit down and create a partnership with a organization that was started right here in the valley – just like us. Founded by Johnjay and Blake Van Es, the LovePup Foundation’s primary mission is to provide rescue dogs the best possible home.
What started out as a simple gesture to rescue a pup in need quickly grew into an incredible undertaking. With thee boys and six dogs of their own, the Van Es family began taking rescue dogs into their home at quite the pace. At one point, they had more than 20 pups in the home; all treated equally with love and compassion. From walks with the boys to playtime in the yard, the dogs receive plenty of TLC – including napping with the Van Es boys, and hanging out on the sofa watching Netflix.
With so many dogs in need, Blake and Johnjay realized that they were definitely going to need some support to keep it growing. They created a foundation to help guide the growth and fill the need; The LovePup Foundation (a naming tribute to the LoveUp movement created by JohnJay and his on-air radio show partner, Rich Berra.)
As a home-grown business founded right here in Glendale, AZ, it is incredibly important to the AZPetVet partners that we find opportunities to give back in our local communities. With our shared core values and belief in the importance of the human-animal bond, the partnership is a wonderful alignment between AZPetVet and LovePup rooted in kindness and compassion. Our family of hospitals came together and created a significant medical grant for the LovePup Foundation. The grant provides the funding for veterinary services that the organization needs to help ensure all the rescued pups have what they need before being placed with their new family; a medical evaluation to ensure any health concerns are addressed, up-to-date vaccines, and spay/neuter to help control the pet population.
We are honored to be partnered with such a wonderful organization like LovePup, and the incredible team members and volunteers at the foundation that work tirelessly to help ensure every pup has a wonderful home.
It’s no surprise that AZPetVet has a bit of a thing about animals. That’s why we always get a little extra excited about working with organizations like Gabriel’s Angels. Each year, they help thousands of Arizona’s at risk children through pet therapy. Since AZPetVet helps thousands of Arizona’s pets each year, we’re kind of a great match!
In fact, AZPetVet’s cofounder, Dr. Wayne Anderson, has been a trusted advisor to Pam Gaber, the founder of Gabriel’s Angels since it was just Pam and Gabriel. Of course, our family was much smaller then too – today we have more than 21 hospitals!
When Pam and Gabriel first set paws in the Crisis Nursery and fell in love with the children, the children fell in love with Gabriel right back. Pam knew that working together, she and Gabriel could make a big difference in little lives. She was right. Today, the Gabriel’s Angels serves more than 13,500 kids each year through more than 125 different nonprofit agencies. We couldn’t be more proud.
Today, we have Gabriel’s Angels therapy teams stop by different AZPetVet locations to meet the staff. They’ll share stories about their work, and the children they serve, while the team oohs and ahhs over the dogs. It’s clear why everyone loves them!
This year, as part of our Giving Back Initiative, AZPetVet became the title sponsor for the 2018 Unleash the Love Breakfast. This highly anticipated fundraising event is held every April, and features highlights of the work they’ve done, the goals for the next year, and of course – DOGS. With more than 50 therapy teams on hand, how can anyone resist helping and donating? Here’s to many more years of dogs and angels!
